Sprint dropping Galaxy Tab to $200 on contract starting April 3rd

An early prank this isn't. Based on our sources (and the pictorial evidence above), Sprint's fixing to whack a full Benjamin from the current $299.99 asking price on its Samsung Galaxy Tab starting on Sunday, making it one of the more affordable ways to get your hands on a 3G-enabled tablet of any kind -- let alone a Froyo-based slate that's received its fair share of compliments. Granted, the original Tab is aging at this point, and we still aren't sure we'd be down for selling our cellular soul for two years just to get a spiffy up-front discount, but hey -- at least you know the option awaits you. Oh, and if spending $429.99 sound a lot better than $199.99 in addition to 24 months of obligation, that'll apparently also be possible.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Microsoft in the Battle Field ? Will King remain the King?

Google has already announced open source lightweight OS that is initially targeted towards netbooks, expected to be released in the 2nd half of 2010.

ms_vs_chrome copy

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We?re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.

Google has invited the OS king Microsoft in the battle field by introducing this open source project. Microsoft is still struggling in the Search Business, but what about OS?

According to the geek stuff, people are speculating that following are advantages of Google Chrome OS:

  • Open Source
  • Netbooks are relatively cheaper
  • Speed
  • Security
  • Portability
  • Compatibility
  • Simplicity

But the some of the points were same for the MAC, but had Apple succeeded in it? No, coz still there are majority of users who prefer Windows, no matter that Apple?s MAC is being used in servers over security purposes.

The only features that had maintained Microsoft to the top level are comfort and compatibility and this help them again in achieving the same success again.

What do you think? Leave your comments.

Harvard physicist puts fires out with electrified wand, hopes to share on HarvardConnection

Okay, so maybe Ludovico Cademartiri will be forced to share the good news on Facebook (or ConnectU, if he's into playing the role of rebel), but at least he's bound to see over a couple of hundred hits. According to The Harvard Crimson, the aforesaid physicist and a smattering of other researchers have stumbled upon a novel way to extinguish flames: electricity. The idea is eventually enable firefighters to squash fires without having to douse a home or object with water and foam -- if hit with a beam of juice, there's at least a sliver of a chance that something can be salvaged. While the specifics of the project are obviously far above our heads, the gist of it is fairly simple -- flames contain soot particles, which become "electrically charged during combustion." Given that those very particles react to electrical fields, a strong enough beam can twist things until it's extinguished completely. Quite honestly, it's a hands-on experience we're desperately trying to arrange, but till then, it looks like another round of Harry Potter will have to do.

?In line with Delhi Metro?s vision for a people-centred public transport system, we have launched several initiatives to help commutersbetter manage their travel time, transfers, and make more informed transport decisions. Crackle starts streaming all of its free movies to Roku, PS3, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players

Sony's Crackle has had a more successful life so far than its previous iteration as Grouper, streaming movies, TV shows and shorts to various devices since launching back in '07 and announced today its full library will be streaming to the PS3, Roku boxes, Sony Blu-ray players and Bravia TVs. Expanding full access from just the Google TV (there's also an Android app that currently streams some of the items) it's taking credit as the only provider offering free full length flicks including Ghostbusters, Bad Boys, A Few Good Men and more for free on these platforms. The drawbacks are video that tops out at 480p standard definition and Hulu-style commercial interruptions but if you absolutely must watch Weekend at Bernies II without spending any money it is an option -- at least, as long as the PS3 browser doesn't crash with an out of memory error like it did for us. It did work better on more capable platforms, so check out the full details in the press release after the break.

How You Can Stream 1080p Over AirPlay After All

Apple’s AirPlay is terrific in so many ways – streaming everything everywhere! – but it’s hard to get over the fact that it maxes out at 720p video streaming. Unless! Unless you’re Eric Govoruhk and Kelly McAteer, and you’ve found a way to use a wireless HDMI transmitter and a USB battery pack to bump AirPlay up to 1080p sweetness. (more…)

Pioneer's SE-NC31C-K noise-cancelling earbuds are cheap, but are they effective?

Active noise cancellation's the secret sauce that keeps us counting sheep even when surrounded by the cacophony of crying babies and the dull roar of jet engines -- though we often find the bulky form factor of those serenity-inducing cans unwieldy. Luckily for us, Pioneer has released its SE-NC31C-K noise-cancellation earbuds that promise to remove 90 percent of ambient noise at the flip of a switch on its AAA battery-powered in-line module -- all for around a hundred bucks, which is a far more palatable price than its sound-suppressing brethren from Sennheiser ($320) and Sony ($415). Should you run out of juice, fear not, for you can bypass the noise cancellation features to listen to your tunage as you would with a garden variety set of buds. Given its (relatively) bargain-basement price, we aren't sure how well Pioneer's latest nullifies ambient noise, but there's only one way to find out if they can give the best headset ever made a run for its money. Should you not share our skepticism, hit the source link and grab a pair for yourself.

Nokia keeps the lawyers well fed, returns to the ITC with fresh complaints about Apple

Like a desperate suitor unable to take "no" for an answer, Nokia's come back to the ITC with fresh allegations about Apple using its patented technologies without proper authorization. On Friday, the International Trade Commission made an initial determination that Apple wasn't actually making use of five patents held by the Finnish company -- a ruling that has yet to be ratified by the Commission itself, notably -- which Nokia predictably "does not agree" with and is now countering with the addition of seven more patents it believes have been infringed. Those relate to multitasking, data synchronization, positioning, call quality, and Bluetooth accessories, and affect "virtually all products" in Cupertino's portfolio. Rather boastfully, Nokia informs us that a total of 46 of its patents are now being actioned in some sort of lawsuit against Apple, whether you're talking about the ITC, US, Dutch, German, or British courts. As the old saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, send in the lawyers. See Nokia's press release about this latest legal activity after the break.

Benchmark Capital?s Stand: We Will Never Do a Seed or Late Stage Fund

Editor's Note: This is part two in an in-depth series exploring the ramifications of the explosion of late stage capital being raised by the Valley's elite venture firms. For part one, go here. In the mid-2000s when nearly every top venture capital firm was expanding to India and China, Benchmark Capital did not share its peers' worldly ambitions. In fact, while the firm retained its Israel fund (for now?), it spun off the top performing UK fund Balderton Capital and retrained its focus firmly on the US. Earlier this year, when early stage investors were losing deals at the hands of the super angels and firm-after-firm launched aggressive seed investing programs, Benchmark Capital did not. It refused to compete with the Ron Conways and Mike Maples of the world; it would wait its turn and invest later. And now - as Benchmark's early stage peers are raising $1 billion growth funds and throwing huge sums of money at established companies like Facebook, Zynga and Groupon - once again, Benchmark Capital is refusing to follow suit.

SimpleGeo Launching ?Storage?: A Distributed Hosted Database For Location Data

The story of SimpleGeo is a familiar one: two founders ?Matt Galligan and Joe Stump ? set off to create location-based games, only to find that the tools they wanted to use to build their apps didn't exist yet. So they switched gears and decided to build what they wished they had: a suite of tools optimized for the creation of location-based services (which was probably a good call given the explosion of location-aware mobile devices). The startup launched almost exactly one year ago, and now offers products including 'Places' (a database of POIs)and 'Context', which lets developers query for data relevant to a given location, like the local weather. And now, they're ready for what Galligan calls the company's "grand unveiling", explaining that it's what they've been focused on for the last year: SimpleGeo Storage, which will be going live tomorrow.
